If you want the refund window, you need to purchase an annual or longer plan, not the monthly rate.
Refund window shrinks after 30 days: between 3 and 30 days after signup, a refund is available on new purchases only. After 30 days, renewals are not refundable and are not prorated, and only qualify within a 15-day prebill window before the renewal charges.

The server I tested is a Standard VPS NVMe 2 plan running Ubuntu 24.04.4 LTS with kernel 6.8.0-111-generic, hosted in Bluehost’s Ashburn, Virginia data center.
One structural note before the numbers is this is a single vCPU plan. Every benchmark below reflects one core doing the work, so the sysbench “multi-thread” run is the same core running the same test a second time, not a second core joining in.
A note on sequencing: I captured baseline resource readings after the full benchmark suite completed rather than before it started. These figures reflect the server settling back toward idle following sustained CPU, memory, and disk load, not an untouched starting state.
CPU: 90.9% idle, with 9.1% recorded as system time and 0.0% across softirq and steal categories. That’s normal housekeeping overhead settling down after a benchmark run, not a sign of contention with another tenant.
Memory: 398 MiB used of 1.9 GiB total (about 20%), with 346 MiB in buffer and cache and 1.5 GiB available
Disk: 2.2 GB of 48 GB used (5%), up from a clean install since fio and sysbench both write temporary test data during a run

No swap on a 1.9 GiB plan means the same caveat applies here as on any small instance: if memory runs out, the Linux OOM killer terminates processes rather than falling back to disk. Claude Code sessions that hold large amounts of file context or run long, memory-heavy operations are the workload most likely to test that ceiling.

The two runs land within 1.5% of each other, which is exactly what a single-core plan should produce. No scaling to report, just confirmation that the core delivers consistent output from one run to the next.
For Claude Code, that single core carries everything at once: file reads, code analysis, shell command execution, and any concurrent operations all queue through the same thread. There is no second core to absorb a spike while another task is mid-run.
2. Memory Speed
I used sysbench with a 1K block size and a 10 GiB total transfer for both sequential write and read passes.

Read outpaces write by roughly 12%, a normal, moderate gap. For Claude Code, this matters most when it is reading source files, project context, or large diffs into memory before acting on them: retrieval at this speed is not a bottleneck for that kind of work.

I used fio across three scenarios: sequential write, sequential read, and random 4K mixed read/write, each run for a 30-second window.

Sequential throughput is strong for an entry-tier plan, well beyond what the advertised storage alone would typically sustain over a full 30-second window, pointing to fast underlying host storage with some benefit from caching during the test.
The random 4K result is the more representative figure for everyday Claude Code use, since git operations, file writes during code edits, and session logging are small and random rather than large and sequential. At roughly 49,200 IOPS simultaneously on read and write, this plan handles that kind of activity without either direction waiting on the other.

Both tests hit the same server, and the results back each other up closely: download within 60 Mbps across both runs, upload within 2 Mbps, and zero packet loss on both.
That consistency is a stronger signal than either number alone, since a single fast result could be a fluke while two matching results are not.
For Claude Code, this connection carries every API call to Anthropic or another connected model provider, every git push and pull, and any package install during a session. Low, stable latency and zero packet loss translate directly into fewer stalls during an active coding session.

A clean sweep across all three subsystems. Zero failures and zero untrustworthy metrics across three minutes of sustained pressure on each one, with the single CPU worker result reflecting the plan’s one core rather than being throttled below what the hardware could deliver.
Verdict on Performance
This plan delivers solid, consistent numbers for its tier. The single vCPU is the defining constraint: Claude Code’s file reads, code analysis, and shell execution all share one core with no second core to fall back on, and the CPU benchmark reflects that directly, with no scaling to measure.
Memory throughput registers as effectively instant at millisecond precision, disk I/O produced roughly 49,200 IOPS simultaneously on random read and write, and two separate network tests against the same server landed within a tight range of each other with zero packet loss on both. The stress test ran clean across CPU, memory, and disk with no failures anywhere.
With 1.9 GiB of RAM and no swap configured, memory stays the resource to watch most closely as a Claude Code session grows in scope, holding more files in context or running longer operations. For light to moderate coding workloads, this plan holds up well. Anyone planning to run larger projects, multiple concurrent sessions, or memory-heavy tooling alongside Claude Code should size up before running into that ceiling.
I tested the full path from finding Claude Code Hosting to confirming Claude Code was installed and ready on a server. That meant registration, first login, server configuration, and the management tools once everything was running.
As with the rest of Bluehost’s VPS lineup, server configuration happens before account creation, so the two are one continuous checkout flow rather than separate steps.
1. Registration

The landing page frames Claude Code around infrastructure rather than a simple feature list. The headline reads “Run Claude Code in an infrastructure built for persistent workflows,” with copy underneath explaining that Claude Code reads files, rewrites code, and runs shell commands in a loop until a job finishes, and that this needs a real VPS environment rather than a laptop that sleeps or a cloud function that times out. Four feature tiles sit below that:

The Pre-configured banner at the top already read “Claude Code · NVMe 2” rather than defaulting to an unrelated application, the way the Hermes Agent flow did. Every step that mattered was already filled in correctly by the time the page loaded:

My take: This is the checkout experience working the way it should. None of this surfaces the Claude Code server directly, and none of it changes based on what you just purchased. After taking in the full page, I clicked Hosting in the sidebar to go find the server myself.
My take: This dashboard is built as a general account hub for the entire Bluehost product line, not a landing page tuned to a fresh VPS purchase. A first-time buyer gets a personal greeting, real metrics for an existing site, and four rotating upsells before anything acknowledges the server they just paid for. That’s a missed moment for reassurance right when a new buyer wants to see confirmation that the purchase went through.
3. Server Management
Next, I clicked Hosting to check on the server directly. The page listed the new server as Standard VPS – NVMe 2, with an internal reference code, Disk Storage at 13% of 50GB used, Server Status already showing Online, an IP address with a one-click copy button, and a Server Image field reading “claude-code on Ubuntu 24.04.”
The same four action buttons sit below it: Start Server (grayed out since it was already running), Reboot Server, Power Off Server, and Open Terminal for full browser-based root access with no SSH client needed.
As with configuration, there was no visible provisioning wait or progress screen between checkout and finding the server active in Hosting.
I clicked Manage to open the individual VPS Overview page, split into the same five tabs used across Bluehost’s VPS products: Overview, License, Access, SSH Keys, and AI Tooling. The Overview tab confirmed the Server Image again, labeled “Claude Code on Ubuntu 24.04” with a Reimage button available. Below that sit:

4. Launching an Instance
After confirming the server was live and correctly labeled, I moved to the question that actually matters: whether Claude Code was genuinely installed rather than just named on the dashboard.
I opened the browser terminal, SSH’d into the server, and ran claude –version.
The command returned “Welcome to Claude Code v2.1.126” along with an ASCII splash graphic, confirming the CLI was installed and ready to invoke, not something I needed to install myself first.
Unlike a tool that drops straight into an active session, Claude Code triggered a first-run setup sequence at this point:
A prompt to choose a text style for the terminal, with seven options: auto-detect, dark mode, light mode, and colorblind-friendly and ANSI-only variants of each
A live preview confirming the choice, a syntax-highlighted code diff showing a one-line change to a greet() function, rendered in the selected theme (Monokai Extended, in my case)
This first-run step is a reasonable one-time setup rather than friction that repeats on every session, but it does mean the moment you first connect, you land in a short configuration flow rather than an immediately usable prompt. Once the theme is set, Claude Code is ready to take instructions on the server.
My take: The important question here checked out cleanly. claude –version responded instantly with the correct tool, no install step needed on my end. The theme selection on first launch is a minor, expected step rather than a real obstacle, and it is the kind of thing a reader should know to expect rather than be caught off guard by.
Overall Verdict on Ease of Use
Getting from the Bluehost homepage to a working Claude Code installation took well under fifteen minutes, and every step here reinforced rather than undercut that speed. Arriving through the Claude Code landing page meant the entire six-step configuration screen came pre-filled correctly: the right location, the right hardware, and the right software already selected before I touched a single field.
The server matched its configuration exactly once provisioned, correct data center, correct image, online and reachable by SSH the moment I went looking for it.
The one real step in the process is the first-run terminal setup, choosing a text style before Claude Code is ready to take commands. That is a small, one-time decision rather than a source of friction.
The dashboard is the weak point in an otherwise tight process. It greets you personally and shows real data, but none of it is about the server you just paid for, and confirming your purchase went through means navigating past an existing site’s metrics and four rotating upsells before clicking into Hosting yourself.

AI Overview interface, not a live conversational chat
I tested Live Chat with two technical questions, then checked the Knowledge Base separately for depth and article quality.

Clicking Chat with Support opens an AI Overview page rather than a back-and-forth chat window. Each answer arrives with a running list of cited source articles underneath and a set of suggested follow-up questions, closer to a smart, conversational search tool than a live chat session with a person.
My first question asked whether the Claude Code VPS supports custom kernel modules or whether Bluehost manages the kernel. The answer walked through a real distinction rather than giving a flat yes or no:
The kernel is managed by Bluehost at the host level, not something accessible from inside the VPS itself
You do have full root access inside the guest instance for installing and managing your own software

My follow-up pushed on something specific to how Claude Code operates: since it runs with full root access and executes shell commands directly, what actually stops it from running something destructive.
The answer did not soften this:
Claude Code has no built-in sandbox or permission prompt to block destructive commands on its own
Running with root access, it can modify or delete files anywhere on the system if instructed to
Protecting against that is described as the account holder’s responsibility, not something the platform handles automatically
It then listed concrete mitigations: running Claude Code under a locked-down, non-root user rather than root directly, keeping it scoped to a specific project directory, adding firewall rules and reverse proxy validation for anything public-facing, reviewing commands before execution in manual approval mode, and using a container or sandbox for untrusted input.
That is a direct, unhedged answer to a real risk question, not a deflection toward generic security advice.
Both responses arrived close together, one timestamped 8:36 AM CT and the second landing seconds after I asked it, consistent with an automated system pulling from the Knowledge Base rather than a queued human reply.
My take: Both answers were specific and technically accurate rather than generic. The kernel question correctly separated what a VPS tier offers from what a Dedicated Server offers, and the root-access follow-up gave a straight, detailed answer about a genuine risk instead of reassurance. The format still reads as a search tool that talks back rather than a live conversation, but the substance earned real credit here.
Knowledge Base
Searching “claude code” directly in the Knowledge Base returned a large result set spanning multiple categories, including VPS, AI Products, Dedicated Servers, Applications, and Advanced Hosting.
The breadth reflects real documentation depth, covering everything from first install to a slash command reference to full project setup guides.
I opened “How to Connect Bluehost AI Credits to Claude Code” to check article quality, since this covers a real configuration step a reader would actually need.
The article splits into three parts:
Section 1, first-time setup: for a Claude Code install that has never been run, walking through SSH login, setting ANTHROPIC_API_KEY and ANTHROPIC_BASE_URL as persistent shell environment variables, loading the profile, and launching Claude Code, all with copyable terminal commands and real captured output showing a live session

My take: This article is built for someone actually sitting at a terminal, not written to look thorough from a distance. Real commands, real captured session output, and an explicit flag distinguishing a confirmed working section from an unverified one. That last detail matters more than it might seem, since it protects a reader from following unverified instructions on a live server.
Overall Verdict on Support
Both channels held up under direct testing, and each proved something different. Live Chat showed it could handle a nuanced technical distinction, correctly separating what a Self-Managed VPS tier permits from what a Dedicated Server would allow, and it answered an uncomfortable root-access security question head-on instead of hedging.
The Knowledge Base showed a different strength. Documentation built by someone who had actually run the commands, down to flagging which part of an article was confirmed working and which part was not yet retested.
Together, that points to a support system backed by genuine product knowledge rather than templated responses. The one caveat worth carrying into a purchase decision is the format of Live Chat itself: it behaves like a search tool that writes full answers, not a live conversation with a person, so anyone who wants a human on the other end should ask for one directly rather than expect it by default.
Conclusion: Do We Recommend Bluehost Claude Code Hosting
Yes. Bluehost gets Claude Code onto a working server quickly and accurately: arriving from the dedicated landing page meant checkout came pre-filled correctly, the provisioned server matched every configuration choice exactly, and claude –version confirmed the CLI ready to use within minutes of paying. Bluehost’s Claude Code VPS suits developers who want a persistent, root-access environment for terminal-first coding work and are comfortable choosing an annual term to keep the refund option open. It is a weaker fit for anyone who wants monthly flexibility with a safety net attached, since that combination is not what this refund policy offers.
